Migrate Oracle PL/SQL and Forms to Java
The benefits of adopting the Java programming language are well documented. Java represents more than the obvious advantages of platform independence and flexibilty. Java is the future. Why? Because Java is the language of the internet, the language of component-based software development and importantly, the language being taught in schools and universities today. Java is also a central theme driving the open source movement.
In this regard, Java warrants serious consideration as a means of future-proofing your software investments. It is difficult to predict the future for proprietary languages such as Oracle Forms and PL/SQL other than to assume that they have a limited shelf life and that perhaps we are closer to the end than the beginning.
Java is clearly strategic for Oracle. So too is Oracle's Java IDE JDeveloper. More and more add-ons and proprietary libraries are being bundled with JDeveloper. It's the same old proprietary lock-in but regardless of this, Java is rightfully stealing the limelight from Oracle's ageing development tools and in the end it's increasingly difficult to see a long-term future for Forms and PL/SQL.
Who knows when you'll get the email to confirm that the game is up and that suddenly you and your organisation have a few months to migrate ... or be prepared to deal with the consequences of your applications only being covered by Extended Assistance Support from Oracle. Quintessence provides two solutions for Oracle customers wishing to transition to Java but retain the Oracle DB as their database server:
- Oracle Forms in2j (for Oracle)
- Oracle PL/SQL in2j (for Oracle)
